1920, when Max Freed set up his storefront on Central
Avenue in downtown Albuquerque, he couldn't have
known he would become part of a grand tradition.
Folks from miles around traveled to Max's store
to buy his impeccably tanned cowhides.
They fashioned the hides
into rugs, wall hangings and pillows, draped them
over sofas and beds, and crafted them into chaps,
belts and other rugged clothing. Fortune smiled
upon Max as word of his quality merchandise spread;
even more folks journeyed to his shop when Central
Avenue became part of the great "Mother Road" — Route 66.
Over
the years folks have visited Max's shop from every
state in the nation. When Max reached retirement
age, he couldn't imagine leaving his customers.
Instead, he turned the shop over to his friend,
David. Cheerful and dedicated, Max worked every
day (without pay!) at the shop for the rest of his
long and happy life.
